Spring training

On March 8th, My softball team and I are preparing to escape this dreadful on and off cold weather here on Long Island. We are heading to Florida to play in Spring training exhibition games for 7 days. On our off day, my friend and I are planning on attending a Mets spring training game. We plan on arriving early to catch a glimpse at Mets prospects and the 2015 NL champions. I am beyond excited to get away from here and to finally watch baseball again.

Last year, my friends and I went to a Washington Nationals game at Space Stadium in Florida. I know you’re probably wondering why we went to a rival’s game. The Mets actually had a day off the same time we had a day off, so we decided any close baseball game was good enough for us to watch. While we were there we got a glimpse at the Florida Marlins warming up and partaking in throwing and fielding drills. I was wearing my “Take back New York” shirt, designed by the company called “The7line”. I saw former New York Met, Jordany Valdespin AKA Spin City. I started shouting at him, saying “Let’s go Mets!” I pointed at my shirt that showed the Mets logo on it and he gave me a smile. He was kind enough to come over to my section and sign and take a nice selfie with me.

I love spring training baseball games because they make you realize how much you missed the sport in the offseason. I love the clean cut grass and the smell of the emerging spring season. I love the warm Florida weather and the friendliness of the players, as they go out of their way to sign and take pictures with fans.

Baseball is different from any other sport. It’s the only sport I can follow on a regular day basis. 162 games plus the postseason. Are you having a bad day? Turn on SNY at 7 pm to watch the Mets play a baseball game. Want to do something fun with friends? Take the Southern State parkway to the Cross Island parkway to Citi Field to watch the game live. While you are there grab yourself a cold beer and burger from shake shack (if the line isn’t long). I usually arrive at Citi Field early to catch batting practice and to get autographs from the visiting team. Tip: autographs are usually easier to obtain from the opposing team. It is very exciting to be able to interact and exchange conversations with MLB players. Many times my friends and I would ask for a players autographs and take pictures with them. Then several months later when those players would return to Citi Field to play the Mets again, they would recognize us. It’s a pretty cool feeling and I cannot wait to do it all again this season.

As a fan of baseball, the offseason is miserable. The only good part of the offseason is Mets Hotstove. The additions the Mets added to this club has made me excited for opening day. It’s also made me anxious because it’s so close but also so far away. This offseason was like no other too. The Mets brought in key pieces that will hopefully formulate into a 2016 World Series winning team. The biggest name that they brought back was Yoenis Cespedes! #GotYoBack

I plan on attending  several games this season to watch the Mets play. In particular, I plan on watching Cespedes. He is such a dynamic player and he always seems to impress everyone day in and day out. I’m also excited about watching the Mets pitching staff dominate opposing hitters at Citi Field.

It’s going to be hard to decide which game I want to attend because I know everyone in the Mets rotation is going to pitch a gem every outing. I believe that Noah Syndergaard is going to be the most complete pitcher for the Mets in 2016. He’s a gamer and isn’t afraid to throw some chin music. What player are you excited to watch at Citi Field?

The countdown to opening day seems so far away. The anticipation of that first home game: the smell of the fresh cut grass, the loud cheers, the sound of the bat squaring up the baseball and watching the Homerun apple rise up. As I sit here in my room, with a few candles lit in darkness, I envision my Mets winning the 2016 World Series. I envision Mets closer Jeurys Familia pumping his fist and hugging catcher, Travis d’Arnaud, after securing the final out of the World Series.

I envision Mets caption David Wright jumping for joy as he finally wins a well deserved World Series. But for now, I can only dream. For now, I can only wish for the weather to get warmer and for the snow to melt off the New York streets. I count down every day until pitchers and catchers report. I count down the days when the first spring training game starts. I count down the days for that first 2016 home game, where 40,000+ fans will pack out Citi Field and chant “Lets Go Mets” over and over again. If waiting is the only hard part about the 2016 New York Mets season then I’m okay with that.
